PhUn Week – Bringing Science to Local Schools

This past month, UAB’s Department of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology put on their 4th annual Physiology Understanding Week (aka PhUn Week).  Led by Dr. Carmel McNicholas-Bevensee, an assistant professor in the department, UAB faculty, postdoc fellows, graduate students, and medical students went to 2 local Birmingham schools, teaching kids K-6 grades about hearts, lungs, various tissues, and basic physiology.

For more details, check out the news article on the UAB School of Medicine page.  If you look carefully in the video, you can spot some of our own MSTP’s, Alice Weaver and Ryne Ramaker!

Here is another short article on PhUn week, with a shot of Alice teaching about an organ to a slightly grossed out but fascinated young boy.  As the first article mentions “The idea is to get children interested in physiology and to engage schools with local universities to create a partnership between the two,” says Dr. Bevensee.  Success? Check and check.
